How the strength standards calculator works

Why ratios, not absolute numbers

Strength-to-weight (lift รท body weight) is the only comparable currency between a 130-lb lifter pulling 315 and a 260-lb one pulling 450 โ€” both 2.4ร—. Powerlifting weight classes exist for this reason, and every standards table (ExRx lineage and descendants) is built on multiples of body weight rather than raw pounds.

What the levels actually mean

Beginner-to-novice arrives in months (neural gains are fast); intermediate โ€” where training knowledge starts to matter โ€” takes 1โ€“2 years per lift; advanced requires 3โ€“5+ years of consistent periodized work; elite is specialization territory that most lifelong lifters never chase, by choice. The table prices the journey honestly so nobody quits at month six for being "behind."

The lift-specific shape

Deadlift ratios run highest (biggest muscles, shortest range), squats next, bench lowest (smallest muscles involved) โ€” roughly 1 : 0.75 : 0.6 among the three for a balanced lifter. Female standards sit ~70โ€“75% of male multiples at equivalent training age, driven by lean mass distribution rather than effort or discipline.
