What percentages actually encode
A percentage of 1RM is a physiological dose that scales to the lifter: 80% produces roughly the same relative demand whether you squat 135 or 500. Programs use percentages because they transfer across lifters, encode progression unambiguously, and leave an autoregulation channel (the rep range) for the human variability every training week contains.
Running the table
Pick the zone your goal needs (85–95% strength, 70–80% hypertrophy-bridge), complete the rep range, and when the top of the range is clean, add 2.5–5% and reset to the bottom. That loop — reps earned, load raised — is progressive overload with the guesswork removed. Deload every 4–6 weeks at ~60% to bank the fatigue.
The human adjustments
Sleep-deprived, stressed, or travel-wrecked days take the low end of the rep range at the same percentage — the system absorbs bad days instead of breaking on them. Conversely, a feel-great day earns the top of the range, not a spontaneous PR attempt. The percentages provide the skeleton; reps-in-reserve provide the nervous system.
